Tanklove

Early in the morning of 4 February 1997 a convoy of tanks was seen rumbling through the streets of Sincan, a district of Ankara. The parade of tanks was a consciously orchestrated show of force which heralded the ‘28 February Process’, otherwise known as Turkey’s postmodern coup. Ergun’s project TANKLOVE, performed years later in a village in Denmark, is motivated by the idea of re-enacting this military show of force in Sincan. Far from being just a video, TANKLOVE should be judged as a performance in which audience and participants alike are confined within a small provincial town. More than the recording of a performance, Ergun’s piece is a video which reintroduces the problematic of the project’s nature, and in so doing it speaks to a different kind of audience. Like the planned military spectacle in Sincan, the artist now stages his own show. Elmas Deniz, 2009
