Mario And The Magician
MARIO AND THE MAGICIAN
During late 1920s, German writer Bernard Fuhrmann comes to Torre di Venere, a small Italian coastal town to spend his holiday with his family. However the days which have been planned to be happy and free of problems turn into a nightmare upon the social and political changes in Italy. In his autobiographic novel Mario and the Magician, Thomas Mann unfolds the development of fascism in Italy, while narrating his own experiences. Klaus Maria Brandauer inquires with narrating his approach and striking shots, a period when the development of fascism could have been stopped at the onset. “If one asserts that this novel makes a description of fascist Italy, that would be an insult to the artistic responsibility and genius of Thomas Mann. It is claimed that the Magician Cippolo who hypnotizes the audience and turns them into a spiritless and consciousness herd without any human feelings, symbolizes Mussolini. It is not fair to distort Thomas Mann’s statements on politics and other issues to lead to such results. The writer tells about his private life in this novel and as well known by everybody, he has the talent to appropriate a private event for the society. Bruno E.
