Vodena (Edessa), Veria (Karaferye) and the surroundings of Kastoria (Kesriye/Kostur). This region was conquered by the Ottomans around 1400 and remained under Ottoman rule for at least 500 years! Evliya Celebi visited the area in the 17th century, and noted that Veria was like ‘paradise on earth’. In 1924, the Muslim population of this region was relocated into central Anatolia as part of the Mubadele.
