Let There Be Light

As the director Marko Škop states “I am interested in the theme of an ordinary man, one out of the millions, who takes part in the mass xenophobic soul with his own tiny, ignorant particle, when he is confronted with the consequences of hatred in a hard way through events that occur in his own family”; Let There Be Light As the director Marko Škop states “I am interested in the theme of an ordinary man, one out of the millions, who takes part in the mass xenophobic soul with his own tiny, ignorant particle, when he is confronted with the consequences of hatred in a hard way through events that occur in his own family”;

Milan travels to Germany to work as a carpenter. When the season ends, he finally returns home in a happy mood but the events he faces will change his mood. The family joy is interrupted by the police to investigate Adam (16), Milan’s oldest son because his classmate has committed suicide and there are suspicions that it was due to bullying. Milan later on will learn that his son is a member of a paramilitary group which aims to protect the homeland, “us” against others. While Milan thinks about what he can do regarding the suicide and his son, he will discover how everything is interconnected; from his family ties, to the priest of the church; from the police, to the community in the village. All of them are responsible for the suicide. Let There Be Light focuses on how fascism finds its roots, first in the family and then spreads to the society, becoming dominant in the society because the ordinary man does “nothing”.
