Nostalgia For The Light

An archaeologist, an astronomer, and a group of women searching for traces of missing loved ones… Their paths cross in Chile’s Atacama Desert, the driest place on earth and therefore an ideal location for astronomical studies. Patricio Guzmán is a director well-known for his political documentaries, and in this masterpiece he muses on different dimensions of the devastation wrought by Pinochet’s military dictatorship. The result is a journey through time, which meanders from a jail for political prisoners to other parts of the country and from a large desert observatory into space. In Guzmán’s hands, the chilling, many-layered story is transformed into a mesmerizing viewing experience.
