Miraz is a young farmer living in the Alps. Plagued by her brutal father, her little brother and sister and by her grandfather, she wants to escape from the dull routine of her daily life. She hopes to emigrate to Canada with five young woodcutters named Josef, Josef, Josef, Josef and Josef. But the story ends fatally and five woodcutters ends up interrogated at a shabby police station under the admonishing gaze of the Austrian president.
