Born in Wiesbaden 1939. Educated at Lycee Henri Quatre in Paris. Studied political science and economics. Studied film directing at Institut des Hautes Etudes Cinematographiques in Paris. Between 1960-1964 worked as assistant to French directors including Louis Malle, Jean-Pierre Melville and Alain Resnais. In 1967 signed a 6 picture contract by Universal. In 1969 formed Hallelujah-Films with Peter Fleischmann, went into partnership with W. German TV stations. Same year married to Margarethe von Trotta. In 1973 formed Bioskop-Film with Reinhard Hauff. In 1974 directed the opera "Katja Kabanova" in Frankfurt and in 1976 the opera "Wir erreichen den Fluss" in Berlin. Received awards for his films.
