Born in 1934 Prague. Studied at the Advanced School of Applied Arts before taking up puppetry at the School of Fine Arts in Prague. His first animation film in 1964 already mixed actors, masks and animation in a surrealistic collage that would become his style. He turned out films on a regular basis (some 14 shorts) until 1972, when he was forced to suspend his activities for several years, due to the unfavourable political climate. In 1987 he made his first animation feature "Alice" which won the Silver Bear at the Berlin Film Festival. After several more shorts he made his second feature "Faust" in 1994, which is a homage to the city of Prague itself, as the "Surrealists magical city".
